Obturator Externus

I had many patients whose hip pain symptoms are often misdiagnose by incompetent, careless orthopedists whose main objective is to see as many patients as possible and cash out on the insurance benefits. Thankfully there are many people who have learned to control pain, through trial and error, and never give up, thus they are always on the look of more options.

As most Orthopedists, look for multiple MRI charts so the places they send these patients, can send them a kickback in a form of money. And of course; with their main goal and their primary objective; which is in most cases to perform surgery on their patients. Albeit is unfair to say all orthopedists are cut by the same sizer, many of them have failed to live up to what they promise to do after leaving Medical school. Let’s explore the obturator externus muscle and discuss why is often forgotten.

The hidden joint and pain causes

Obturator externus is a skeletal muscle of the hip that is responsible for lateral rotation and adduction, of the tight. Often bursatis is a problem when this muscle has been compromised on the hip. Bursatis is a condition of the joint in which the sac of fluid between the joints, muscle and tendons, becomes irritated. Obturator externus bursa occurs in the hip area, mostly in individuals over the age of 40, or in those who participate in athletics, irritation of the bursae may include from repetitive motion of the joints like running or from a serious injury.

Where is it located and what muscles are related to it

Obturator externus is located in the pelvis on the anterior aspect of the innominate bones, it covers the obturator foramen and is located deep to pectineus and superior parts of the adductor of the thigh. It’s tendon lies deep to the quadratus femoris and separates it form the head of the femoris muscle and separates it from the neck of the femur.

Why is it always misdiagnosed and hard to find by orthopedists?

This is simply because most of the pain isn’t located on the obturator itself, as is a prolong feeling running mainly on the hip, feeling tight and with lots of lateral pain. This often can be mistaken by hip dislocation, weakness in hip leg adduction, groin pain, sharp pain in the bicep femur, and other symptoms. However, the problem continues, until proper therapies are applied into the area specifically to relieve pain and promote mobility.

How to treat obturator externus pain?

Since most of the symptoms of pain will be found on the groin and abductors muscles is highly recommended you follow these 3 steps and find out where it hurts the most when pain has been located thus you can talk to your therapist for a quick solution or relief on it:

1-Perform soft tissue massage to the groin muscle.

2- Soft tissue massage of the muscles and connective tissues around the joints by experience therapist

3-Progressive strengthening hip exercises supervised by experience therapist.

Conclusion

What could be often misdiagnose and worse yet, a leading surgery symptom, can be easily fix and treat by an experience therapist by just applying hand therapy around the joints and strengthening the full obturator’s stabilizing muscles that may be weak and tight.
