I have trying fasting successfully on MYSELF and other clients, and the effects have worked great, while supervising them and stay with them assisting, during fasting cycles. But even on myself hasn’t been thta easy when skip meals, regardless of years as a Licensed nutritionist and prolific health and fitness researcher, I still haven’t found a comfort zone in between doing it. As: Parsippany NJ #1 Weight Loss Specialist. I have seen different cases where people who come for weight management in Parsippany NJ, tend to get frustrated by how hungry they get when they fast or skip meals. Although, it may work fine and breakfast is a form of fasting, I reccomend you first check with your Doctor. And; if ok, I suggest you start skipping one meal. But if you ask me in this current (skip breakfast) situation, and stem by my results and others. Over 20 years what my view is on skipping breakfast; I said don’t do it and here is why:

Benefits of Eating Breakfast

American Heart Association earlier this year, reported that breakfast eaters tend to have lower rates of heart disease, high blood presure and high cholesterol. Breakfast can be of many benefits. Unwittingly of some of those benefits people go on with their day forgetting about it.

My experience on the fat loss aspect has been determinant for me to think that breakfast is crucial:

  • Helps getting rid of unhealthy salty snacks in the middle of the day
  • Helps augmenting energy levels
  • Puts a stop on your sweet tooth
  • Energizes your day
  • You can star with a dose of healthy protein and fiber. Which contributes to nourish your body properly.

Benefits Of Skipping Breakfast

On the other side of the spectrum there has been plenty of research on some of its benefits such as: Fat oxidation, on the days people skip breakfast, University of Hohenheim in Germany tested 17 healthy adults on three separate days once when they skipped breakfast when they did not. They found that people oxidize more fat, (meaning their body break down more fats storages) when they skip breakfasts. They also said; people who skip breakfast can burn more calories during the day. My suggestion is that on the days when you do this practice, have plenty of water and be on point with the rest of your meals so you don’t overeat afterwards.

Homeostasis is the key

Achieving balance is the most important of all the benefits you get by any dietary practice you adopt. And realistically skipping meals has nothing to do with homeostasis. You can have an impairment on metabolic flexibility (the bodies ability to switch between burning fat and carbs) which may in the long term lead to low grade inflammation and impaired glucose homeostasis. University of Alabama Birmingham research for nutrition science concluded that because chronic inflammation is known to affect insulin sensitivity, skipping breakfast can contribute to “metabolic impairment”. Which could potentially raise the risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Conclusion

You may want to rethink about skipping breakfast because, the inflammation, factor and the impairment on metabolic flexibility, which at the end of the day we all want. Temporary fixes don’t work, and although I have implement some of these practices on my dieters, I always tell them isn’t sustainable, but important to do it to know their bodies. Plus is a diet plan they get, with proper nutritional alignment. My take on this is don’t fast unless you are supervised by a professional.
